Baxter goes home

We are all delighted that one of our very-long-stay dogs has finally found his perfect new home.

After more than a year of waiting, Baxter has gone to live with a new family which includes several horses and cats, so he will certainly have enough company to keep him happy, loved and busy!

Sad news

It's a very sad time for us at the Shelter. Unfortunately, due to complications with Toby's second knee operation, he was in an intolerable amount of pain and discomfort even with medication. We have regrettably had to follow the strong advice from our vets and have Toby put to sleep.
Thank you to all our supporters for your time, energy and donations to help Toby and give him the best chance. He will be missed by all who met him.

Christmas Coffee morning and bazaar

Our Christmas bazaar and coffee morning was held in November by a dedicated group of ladies who run regular events to raise money for WARS. There is a huge amount of effort involved in organising refreshments (including delicious cakes!) and a whole range of items for sale and it's well worth it - this time they raised the amazing sum of nearly £1500!!

Results of the November Draw for the 100 CLUB Prizes!

The '100 CLUB' is run by a volunteer to raise funds for the shelter.

This month's draw was held at the Committee meeting at the end of the month. The lucky winners are:

        2nd    Miss L Malvern         £20.00

        3rd    Amy Letchford          £10.00

Sponsor a Cat Pen

New for this Winter 2011 - you now have the choice to Sponsor a Cat Pen as well as a Kennel.
So if you're a cat-lover or know someone who is, why not sponsor one of our pens as a treat to yourself, or as the perfect Christmas present?
You could be helping to keep an unwanted cat happy and healthy, or a tiny kitten alive!

August Dog Show 2011

Brentknoll Vets did a wonderful job of organising and running their Show for us.

In spite of the windy weather we raised about £1600 altogether, which is a
great addition to our funds and we are so grateful to Brentknoll for all their hard work. The cake stall was a big attraction as was the raffle which had some amazing prizes including theatre tickets and photo sessions.

Some of the gorgeous dogs who entered are shown here with their
proud owners.

New member of staff
We would like to give a warm welcome to Ned, our new Animal Welfare Assistant.
Ned is a full-time member of our team, so any of you visiting the Shelter will no doubt be meeting him soon.

  Pet Goodies

If you need anything for your dog or cat, why not pop in to see us and have a look at our
Pet Goodies Stall in  Reception?

We have a mixed and ever-changing selection of products available, as we are often donated good quality items which we can't use for the dogs and cats here, but which we can sell to raise money for them.

Normal opening hours, between 11  and 3, Wednesday to Sunday.

Summer Newletter

Did you know we also have a printed newsletter which comes out twice a year? The Summer 2011 issue is now available at the Shelter, featuring the story of Toby the pointer who we rehomed in 2007, who still comes back to all our Shows to visit us.

Another milestone for WARS

Ollie is our 1000th dog!

Ollie the collie is dog number 2000 (we didn't start at number 1!).

 Our very first dog
was rehomed in April 2001, and we are all very proud that
in just over 10 years we have rescued the grand total of 1000 dogs.

Dog Show 2011

A BIG thank you to all our amazing volunteers and supporters who turned out for the dog show in spite of cold and wet weather. It was another great day for the Shelter with loads of money being raised to help our animals.

The stars of the day were of course the dogs. Not just the ones who won rosettes, but all of them who came along and behaved so beautifully. It's so good to see dogs we've rehomed coming back with their families.

First prize for Best Rescue and Best WARS dog went to dalmatian Domino as you can see on the right:

Here (on the right) you can see all three dogs lined up to receive the Best in Show rosettes, with the handsome pointer coming in first place.

And here (on the left) are some of the trailhounds who we have rehomed, in front of the Trailhound Welfare Stand.

2011 Fete

After a stormy Saturday night which threatened to blow away all our gazebos, we had an afternoon of brilliant sunshine for this year's fete, and people arrived in their hundreds. As always loads of our volunteers helped to provide a huge variety of stalls, which were all really popular, and the refreshments had a mad rush at lunch time.

The Pontiacs were here playing live, giving us a fantastic selection of 50s and 60s hits to listen to.

We would like to thank everyone who helped to make it such a successful day which raised £2545 for our animals.

Easter Egg Raffle

The draw for our Easter egg raffle was held on Easter Monday. This year's winner was Justin, who is one of our regular dog walkers.

We are delighted that the raffle raised £68 for the Shelter.

New cattery floor

We now have a beautiful new and improved floor in the cattery which is easier to clean and more hygienic for the cats as well.

Basil and Brian have come back to us from their foster home, and we are taking in new cats for rehoming again.

The BEST news!! Ty has found a new home too!

We are all soooo pleased for him. When he met his new owners it was like he knew they were the ones, and he was brilliant and showed off all his best tricks for them. He's now settling in nicely and we're all hoping they'll be happy together for a very long time. He's even been playing off the-lead in his local park and coming back to his owners for treats!

A big thank you to everyone who helped with his appeal.

Tommy has finally found a loving home!

Tommy has finally gone to his new home after spending a total of 320 days at the shelter!

He has now gone to live a happy life with his new pal Winston (a previous WARS dog) and looks like he has already settled in well.

Reunited at last!

This is the happiest story of the year so far!

Cedric came in to us as a stray and had been here for ages waiting for a new home. At the weekend (5th Feb 2011) we got a call from a family saying they'd seen him on our website and thought he was their dog who they'd had from a puppy and lost nearly two years ago.
They rushed straight over here to see him and immediately knew he really was their Ty, and he was over the moon to see them as well.
His family have three children, one of whom grew up with him from a baby
, and we are all so pleased to see them back together as a whole family again.
