The Rescue Shelter owes its existence to this very special and determined group of people who have worked since 1983 (!) to achieve their goal.

[Jan]Jan attended the inaugural meeting of WARS on 23 May 1983 but did not become a Committee member until the end of that year. She took on the role of Secretary on 2 June 1987 and still holds this position.

My role is varied and includes calling Committee meetings, Annual General Meetings, dealing with the day to day correspondence of the Shelter, attending various meetings with Councils and outside organisations on behalf of the Charity and producing Business Plans for the Shelter to name but a few aspects. I also help out at fundraising functions.

I am passionately committed to WARS, albeit I feel very saddened that we live in a society that warrants organisations such as ours.

Ann has been with WARS since she moved to this area 17 years ago. She is a fundraiser and Trustee.

I advertise for, collect, sort, price etc goods to sell at fundraising events. I help with organising events - which includes booking halls, ringing helpers, arranging floats and setting up events and clearing away. More recently I have become involved in helping the Treasurer : this involves counting and banking money - not only from events but raffles, donations, memberships etc. I also help at street collections.

It is sometimes very hard work - but I cannot think of a more worthy cause!

[Di]Di has been on the Committee since 1983 - at the very beginning when the Shelter was just a dream. She says :

I have been fundraising for WARS for the last 19 years. This involves advertising for goods, collecting, sorting and transferring them to events. I also organise the raffles for the Charity, and take part in street collections. This can sometimes seem like hard work, and can be quite tiring at times. However, now that the Shelter is up and running and I can see the dogs being cared for, it all seems worthwhile and very rewarding.

[Barbara]Barbara has spent 12 happy years as a Committee member with WARS.

My main involvement is fundraising, doing table sales and fairs mainly selling good quality bric-a-brac, some very old items and occasionally antiques. Every year I arrange an Autumn fair at Bromyard. I also see to advertizing in my area, which includes having venues announced over the local radio.

Joyce answered an advertisement for people interested in forming an Animal Shelter in 1983 and became Treasurer and Membership Secretary in 1986. She says "It has been a long and difficult task, but ultimately rewarding as we have finally achieved our goal!"

Committee member Francis has painted these representations of how the Shelter might look in a few years' time with another kennel block and perhaps a cattery - but the proposed house for the Manager will need to be sited elsewhere since there is now an outdoor 'play-pen' on the left.

At the official Opening Ceremony of the Shelter Barbara, the President paid tribute to Wendy, who was a founder member and tireless worker for the Shelter, but she sadly died just before she could see the fruition of all her hard work. Members of the Committee have very fond memories of Wendy, whose vision and enthusiasm was undiminished even after she had to retire due to ill-health. Barbara also thanked Mrs Jean Sainsbury, who has been a notable benefactor of the Shelter.

[sharonwithMax]

Sharon has been a stalwart volunteer at the shelter from its very early days.

She tries to walk the dogs twice a week and thoroughly enjoys the time she spends with them.

Joining the Committee in May 2004 has meant that she can add a new dimension to her support for the shelter.
